SELF-REALIZATION · THE INNER JOURNEY
Discover the awareness
behind the mind.
Beneath our roles, thoughts and emotions is a deeper sense of being. Self-realization is the journey of knowing that inner Self directly.
Who am I? · What is awareness? · What is bliss?

to “I know that I am.”
THE QUESTION BENEATH EVERY ROLE
You are more than the life you can describe.
We usually identify ourselves through our place in society, family and friendships; through the needs of the body; and through the emotional and intellectual expressions of the mind.
These are real parts of life, but they do not completely answer the deeper question: Who is the one experiencing them?

AM I?
FROM EXPERIENCE TO THE EXPERIENCER
From “I exist” to “I know that I am.”
Looking inward reveals increasingly subtle layers of identity—and finally the awareness that knows them all.
01
I experience the world
The body connects us with people, places, activity and the changing world around us.
THE OUTER LAYER
02
I experience the mind
Thoughts, memories, emotions and desires form the personal story we usually call “me.”
THE INNER LAYER
03
I am the knower
Behind every changing experience is the steady awareness that knows: “I know that I am.”
PURE CONSCIOUSNESS
“
Cosmic Consciousness abides in the very sense of existence, in one’s very heart’s desire.
— Shrii Shrii Anandamurti

THE DEEPEST SELF
What is self-realization?
When we look more deeply into the simple feeling “I am,” we discover a subtler sense of being. It is not only the experience I exist, but the more profound recognition: I know that I am.
The “I” that knows is pure consciousness—the witnessing awareness behind the changing body and mind. Direct realization of that inner consciousness is called self-realization.

SPIRITUAL PRACTICE MADE PRACTICAL
Meditation is the core technique.
Spiritual practice gives us a method for moving from surface identity toward direct inner experience. Meditation trains the mind to become steady, subtle and expansive.
01
Turn inward
Create space beyond the constant pull of external demands.
02
Gather the mind
Bring scattered attention toward a calm and uplifting focus.
03
Expand awareness
Move beyond the boundaries of a small and separate identity.
04
Live the insight
Carry greater awareness into relationships, work and service.
THE LONGING AT THE HEART OF LIFE
What we seek is deeper than temporary pleasure.
Knowingly or unknowingly, human beings seek lasting fulfilment. Achievements, possessions and pleasant experiences can enrich life, yet none remains unchanged forever.
Self-realization points toward what we most deeply want: perfect peace and a happiness not limited by circumstances—what the tradition calls bliss.

REALIZATION IN EVERYDAY LIFE
Inner awareness naturally reaches outward.
Self-realization is not an escape from daily life. As our sense of identity expands, the well-being of others becomes inseparable from our own.
This is why Ananda Marga holds two ideals together: the realization of the deepest Self and practical service for the welfare of all.
